D’var Torah from Shaaray Tefila’s Israel Engagement Committee

Those of us who were lucky enough to attend services last Friday evening heard Rabbi Strom’s wonderful sermon about our teens’ trip to Israel last month. Rabbi Strom used last week’s Torah portion, Sh’mot, to springboard into his topic via the use of names and shared the names of the Shaaray Tefila teens as well as the Ohel Avraham teens. I’d like to use Sh’mot as well but for this d’var Torah, I want to focus on a different portion of the same chapter of Sh’mot that Rabbi Strom focused on, the one where Moses questions God’s choosing him to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt. Moses does not question God’s choice once or twice…

Our First Ever Teen Exchange with Ohel Avraham”

This Shabbat begins the book of Sh’mot, the book we call Exodus. It is the seminal story of the Jewish people, of our freedom and redemption, the leaving of Egypt for the Promised Land of Israel. Two weeks ago yesterday, ten of our teenage chalutzim, or pioneers, along with Hope Chernak, Linda Minton, and myself, embarked on an Exodus of our own, the first ever Teen Exchange program between Shaaray Tefila and our partner congregation in Haifa, Ohel Avraham and the Leo Baeck Education Center…
